I have a question about Voltarol® range of products

The Emulgel® products have a unique formulation which helps the active ingredient, diclofenac, to penetrate into the skin and provide a cooling and moisturising effect.

Unlike products such as heat patches and cooling gels that work by only cooling or heating the skin, Voltarol® products contain a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) called diclofenac which targets pain at its source. It works by blocking production of some of the body’s chemicals that cause inflammation, pain, tenderness and swelling.

Unlike heat patches, the plaster contains an anti-inflammatory. It relieves pain and inflammation directly at its source. The plaster also provides 12 hours continuous release of the active ingredient (diclofenac) to the site of pain. it only needs to be applied once in the morning and once in the evening to provide effective pain relief. The plaster format means the product is very discreet: It is odourless and sticks firmly, whilst only 1mm thin and very flexible.

When the body is damaged, certain chemical signals (prostaglandins) are produced and they promote inflammation and pain. Voltarol® products work by blocking the production of these signals, thus reducing pain and inflammation.

Products form the Voltarol® range can be purchased in major supermarkets, including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Morrisons and Waitrose. Please consult your pharmacist or doctor for further advice on which product to use.

You may be familiar with the Voltarol® brand name from other products prescribed by your doctor. The products described here are different as they can be purchased from your pharmacist or in supermarkets without a prescription. For further advice on where to purchase Voltarol® products please refer to the previous question. Please consult your pharmacist or doctor for further advice on which product to use.

Emulgel® is a technology specifically for Voltarol. It helps the gel to penetrate deeply into the skin to enhance delivery of the active ingredient, diclofenac, to the site of pain and swelling. In addition, the Emulgel® technology is a unique combination of a gel and cream providing both a cooling and soothing effect when applied to the skin.

I have a question about Ingredients

Diclofenac belongs to a group of anti-inflammatory drugs called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and is the most prescribed NSAID pain killer with 30 years of heritage in the UK. When the body is damaged, certain chemical signals (prostaglandins) are produced and they promote inflammation and pain. Diclofenac works by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins, thus relieving inflammation and pain at its source.

NSAIDs are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or painkillers, which are drugs that help relieve pain. NSAIDs including diclofenac, ibuprofen and aspirin, are used to treat a wide range of conditions including: - Inflammation (redness & swelling) which is the source of pain - Soft tissue injuries such as sprains and strains - Most types of arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis - Back pain and neck pain - Bringing down a high temperature (fever) - Headaches, painful periods, toothaches - Help with interior infections, such as common cold and flu (NSAIDs help to relieve the symptons) NSAIDs are available as topical and oral products, such as Voltarol® Pain-eze Emulgel®.

Like all medicines, Voltarol® products can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. If you experience any side effects with a Voltarol® product, please consult your doctor or pharmacist immediately. Voltarol® Emulgel® products may cause skin rashes, itching, sensitivity to the sun, wheezing and shortness of breath. Possible side effects for Voltarol® tablets include stomach pain, headaches, dizziness. Before using a Voltarol® product, it is important that you carefully read the patient information leaflet included in the pack and consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions. If you require any more information, please feel free to contact us.

It is difficult to predict whether you will be allergic to a Voltarol® product, unless the substance which previously caused a reaction has been identified and can be compared to our product ingredients. If you are allergic to diclofenac, acetylsalicylic acid other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g. ibuprofen) or any of the excipients you should not use our product.

I have a question about Pain

Pain is an unpleasant sensation ranging from mild to unbearable. It occurs when something external, for example temperature or physical pressure, damages tissue and triggers our sensory nerves within the body. Pain is mediated by the nervous system and is a complex phenomenon. In conditions like osteoarthritis, sprains or strains, the joint or the surrounding muscles can become inflamed or swollen, which can cause pain. This is part of the body’s defense mechanism. Modern medicines help to control these symptoms.

Inflammation or swelling is a sign that your body is experiencing pain. When starting the healing process the body responds to an external trigger, such as temperature or physical pressure, by swelling at the affected area. This allows increased blood flow to the site of pain which then leads to redness and/or heat.

Arthritis is a common condition that causes pain and inflammation within a joint. The inflammation can have many causes. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis in the UK, with an estimated 8.5 million people suffering with it and 1 million people seeking medical help every year. In osteoarthritis the cartilage becomes thinner and may even disappear completely. The changes in the cartilage cause inflammation, especially in the early stages of osteoarthritis. Eventually bony outgrowths and loss of cartilage make the joint very stiff and difficult to move. Over time the pain may decrease and eventually disappear altogether, although the bumps and swelling may remain, which may bend fingers sideways if the osteoarthritis is in the hands for example.

Analgesic is the medical term for a painkiller, which is a drug that can relieve pain. Paracetamols work ‘centrally’ in the parts of the brain where pain is perceived. They do not provide relief from inflammation or swelling; NSAIDs (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) including diclofenac, ibuprofen and aspirin help stop pain by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins which activate pain receptors that send “pain” signals via nerves in our spinal cord to our brain. Some anaglesics work by desensitising local nerve endings (for example, in a painful joint). They reduce inflammation or swelling which is the source of pain. The Voltarol® range of products belongs to the NSAID group of analgesics.

Depending on the type of pain you are suffering, you can take specific actions to help speed up your recovery time or decrease the impact it has on your wellness. Good nutrition, appropriate application of cold or warmth to the painful area, resting in some cases, or mild exercise in some others, are well-accepted supportive measures to recover or increase your health. In the days after an injury, you may also find it useful to follow the PRICE emergency plan: PROTECT the area from further damage – e.g. stop the activity you were doing REST the area over the next 3-5 days depending on how quickly the area recovers ICE the area frequently to prevent excessive swelling and further tissue damage COMPRESS the area using stretchy bandage or tubigrip ELEVATE the area whenever possible as this helps reduce the swelling Remember you can consult your health care professional if you need further information.
